What level is the course and do I need any particular skills:

This is an intermediate photography course and it is an ideal follow-up to our Photography for beginners: camera skills or for anyone with a basic technical grounding.

You will need to have manual functions on your camera (i.e. be able to change the aperture and shutter speed settings).

You’ll need to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Course description

The course is designed for those who would like to use their camera and to further explore what makes a good photograph. It will provide a thorough and exciting overview of camera skills and the opportunity to master them when taking photographs in different environments.

As well as revising and refreshing existing knowledge, you will learn new, more advanced skills – from exposure use to selecting the right lens – and practise how to apply them across different themes and styles of photography.

You will be set mini-assignments between classes, as sharing your pictures with the tutor and the rest of the group will help to build your confidence and take your photos to the next level.

What will I need to bring? What do we provide?

Please bring a notebook, a digital or 35mm film SLR camera with whatever lenses you have.

If you have not yet purchased a camera you will be supplied with a digital SLR for use during first few sessions of the course.

We are unable to lend out equipment between taught sessions.

Will I get feedback? What could I do next?

Your tutor will encourage you to use new skills outside of the course for personal development or to prepare a portfolio of work if desired.
