What level is the course and do I need any particular skills: 

Ideal for beginners but also mixed level i.e. those who have some drawing experience but have never worked with portrait before. 

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. 

Course description 

An introduction to the basic techniques for drawing and painting portraits 

Basic observational skills will be explored as well as advice on how we can convey mood, character and tell a story through a portrait, inspired examples of artists’ portrait drawings and paintings. Working from direct observation of the live model. 

Course content: 

What topics will you cover 

  • An introduction to the human facial proportions and anatomy 
  • Using lines to describe the human face and characteristics 
  • How to capture expressions 
  • An introduction to the idea of light and shade and how to depict shading on the face 
  • Design and composition 
  • Measuring the face, looking, and seeing different planes 
  • Explore the relationship between shapes of varying size faces 
  • Long sittings, and detailed portraits 

Learning objectives 

By the end of the course you will have 

  • A better understanding of facial anatomy and the underlying structure  
  • Develop skills in using different materials and media for drawing and painting from observation 
  • Learn the value of simplification 
  • Complete portraits of varying faces and stages 

How will I be taught? What kind of activities will I be doing? 

You will observe and sketch a variety of short and long poses of various faces/sitters 

You will be asked to look and see the form of the face developing tone, light and shape.  

The class will be primarily practical with one-to-one tuition, exercises, demonstrations, informal talks and group discussions. Optional homework tasks. 

What will I need to bring? What do we provide? 

You will need to bring and A2 sketch pad. The tutor will advise you if you wish to buy additional art equipment. 

We will provide basic materials. 

Will I get feedback? What could I do next? 

Your tutor will give group and individual feedback, and you will be encouraged to share your work and your views with the rest of the group. 

Students will be encouraged to continue their drawing practice outside the class, for personal development and to prepare a portfolio of work if desired.
